Cloud Gate

The Indian born, British artist Anish Kapoor placed her first public outdoor work in the United states in the AT&T plaza in Millennium Park, off of the Loop Community in Chicago. After winning a public sculpture contest her work, Cloud Gate, was constructed from 2004 to 2006 and has since then become a true Chicago Icon, as well as a highly popular photographic opportunity. This 110 ton elliptical sculpture forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates, 168 total, welded together to reflect Chicago’s famous skyline and clouds above. There is a 12-foot high arch that creates a ‘gate’ to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror-like surface and see their own reflection in many different perspectives within the swirling design.

This grand piece of stainless steel art was inspired by liquid mercury and is among the largest of its kind in the world, sitting at 66-feet long and 33-feet high. This Cloud Gate sculpture is more commonly known as The Bean, due to its obvious shape reminiscent of the fruit. This photogenic and iconic city landmark is considerably popular both domestically and internationally, and it’s convenient location within Millennium Park makes this stop a fun and diverse part of your day in Chicago. Take in all of the beautiful green space within the surrounding park, all of the gorgeous landscape and architecture, and even all the surrounding shops and eateries while gazing upon the artistic splendor that is Cloud Gate!
